BUILDING COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS THAT SUPPORT FAMILIES OF YOUNG CHILDREN

Great Start Livingston builds community connections that support families with young children. Livingston County’s Cradle to Kindergarten structure is designed to provide a system for community partners to collaborate and for families to access resources.

Developmental milestones offer important clues about a child’s developmental health. Reaching milestones at the typical ages shows a child is developing as expected. Evidence shows that the earlier development is assessed—the greater the chance a child has to reach his or her potential. Children reach milestones in how they play, learn, speak, act, and more.

Explore the following resources to help you understand what your child is going through at each stage of their development and how you can help them develop. Learn what milestones to watch for at each age as they grow. You can find information, activities, handouts, videos, and more.

Year 1   |   Ages 0 – 1

Your baby’s first year is one full of developmental milestones. These are skills like rolling over, sitting up and first steps. It’s also things like smiling, cooing and waving “bye-bye.” Each of these milestones are things most children do by a certain age. They cover a wide range of behaviors like playing, learning, speaking, and moving (from crawling to walking to jumping).

80% of Your Child’s Brain Develops by Age Three

It’s during this first year that your baby’s brain begins to develop memory, language, thinking and reasoning skills. They learn by reaching out and exploring their world. They listen to you and begin to understand what names you use for people and things. They also learn love and trust from the way you cuddle, hold and play with them.
