A Summer Evening of Connection at Our Family Coalition Picnic

We couldn’t have asked for a better evening to wrap up the season with our Great Start Livingston Family Coalition! On Thursday, June 19, families from all across Livingston County came together at Genoa Township Park for a night of connection, laughter, and play.

The event was designed especially for families with children ages 0–8—and everything from the scavenger hunts to the pizza table reflected that warm, welcoming energy.

🐾 Wild Fun for All Ages

The kids kicked off the evening with a safari-themed scavenger hunt, searching for animal yard signs with fun rhyming clues throughout the park. Meanwhile, parents and caregivers had their own playful challenge—a “People Hunt” icebreaker game that got everyone chatting and connecting.

🕊️ Creativity Takes Flight

One of the highlights of the night was a visit from our friend Shelley Frazier, MPH, Community Nutrition Instructor with Michigan State University Extension – Livingston County. Shelley brought a hands-on bird craft activity to pair perfectly with the Genoa Township StoryWalk® book, “I Am a Bird.” Families loved exploring the trail while creating something together and connecting with nature and literacy at the same time.

🍕 Pizza, Prizes, and Parent Power

Of course, no picnic is complete without food—and pizza was served! Families gathered on picnic blankets and lawn chairs, sharing stories, laughter, and a sense of community. Parents also walked away with free books, small prizes, and invitations to join upcoming Family Coalition meetings.

Events like these are about more than just play—they’re about building stronger relationships, protective factors, and a more connected early childhood community in Livingston County.
