Earned Income Tax Credit – You may qualify
Did You Know?
Each year thousands of Michiganders who are eligible for both federal and state Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC) do not claim them!
What is Earned Income Tax Credit?
Earned Income Tax Credit, also called EITC, is an important benefit providing extra money to working families. To claim EITC, you need to meet certain requirements and file a tax return, even if you have no other filing requirement or owe no tax. Even though the 2020 tax season is now technically over, it really isn’t. You can amend your 2020 tax return so that you can take advantage of this benefit from last year’s tax season.
Are You Eligible for EITC?
If your income is at certain levels you could receive over:
- $3500 if you have 1 child
- $5900 if you have 2 children
- $6600 if you have 3 or more children
Answer questions using the EITC Assistant on irs.gov.
- Go to Credits/Deductions – Earned Income Tax Credit page for more information and resources.
Can I get free tax help to prepare or ammend my taxes?
A VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) volunteer can help you file for EITC for free if you qualify. VITA sites offer free tax help to people who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns, including:
- People who generally make $57,000 or less
- Persons with disabilities; and
- Limited English-speaking taxpayers
At this time, the closest VITA site is the Accounting Aid Society which is located in Detroit. To schedule an appointment or ask questions call them at 313.556.1920. (During tax season, there may be a Livingston County location.)
View the Livingston County Earned Income Tax flyer for more information about EITC including income eligibility levels.
