STEP INTO A STORYWALK® ADVENTURE

Follow the path and read the pages as your family embarks on an active journey through Livingston County StoryWalks.

Great Start Livingston is excited to bring StoryWalks to Livingston County. A StoryWalk is a literacy-boosting project which places an illustrated children’s book, taken apart and displayed spread-by-spread, along a walking route. The StoryWalk also encourages physical activity. Families will enjoy various parks throughout the community and will find various activities you can do as you move from page to page. We invite you to explore the StoryWalks and Reading Trails in our community.

Jake’s excited about going on a trip to an island, and he really, really, really wants to see a moose. But his dad insists that there are no moose on this island. In playful rhymes, author Stephanie Calmenson brings the reader along with Jake and his dad, as they explore the mammals, birds, insects, and sea life on and around the island.

Some days you wake up and you just gotta wokka. Wokka what? Wokka-wokka! It’s about movement. It’s about dance. It’s about shimmy-shakin’, be-boppin’, and more! It’s about gathering friends and joining the party. The creative team behind My Father, the Dog returns with a call-and-response for preschoolers, an exuberant invitation to be part of the fun — and show your stuff!

What do seven kids do on a cold winter day when rain and sleet have created a thick crust of ice on top of the snow? Lizzie and her friends convince her grandfather to let them try to push his old-fashioned travis sled, a long, bench-like sled on runners, uphill so they can fly downhill, down the highest, mightiest, iciest sledding hill off Old Mountain Road.

As a trio of tired tots settles into bed for the night, the sheep who should be helping them count down to slumber kick up their hooves instead in an energetic dance performance. Starting with one little lamb and counting up to 10, these “sleep” sheep tap, waltz, tango, and even boogie as they get their nighttime groove on. But finally, after their energy is danced out, nap sheep lull everyone to sleep.

My backyard is where we play and learn, but it wasn’t always my backyard…Hit rewind on the view out your backdoor as this story zips back in time, showing readers how people, lifestyles, and land have changed over time. My Backyard Used to Be makes history feel current and accessible to young readers―and encourages them to discover what their own backyard used to be.
