What Is the ASQ? A Simple Guide for Parents in Livingston County
If you have ever wondered, “Is my child on track?” you are not alone.
Many parents have questions about their child’s development. A free ASQ screening can help you better understand how your child is growing and learning.
What Is the ASQ?
ASQ stands for Ages & Stages Questionnaires.
It is a short, parent-completed check-in that helps track how your child is growing and developing. You fill it out based on what you see every day at home — because you know your child best.
The ASQ is:
- Quick
- Easy to complete
- Free through Help Me Grow Livingston
- Made to give helpful information — not labels
It is not a test. There are no grades. It is simply a tool to support healthy development.
Why Complete an ASQ Screener?
Families in Livingston County complete ASQ screenings to:
- Better understand what to expect next
- Highlight their child’s strengths
- Catch concerns early — when support helps most
- Support conversations with doctors and educators
ASQ is about information, reassurance, and support — not judgment.

Two Screeners. One Whole Child.
There are two types of ASQ screenings.
ASQ-3: Developmental Skills
The ASQ-3 looks at how your child is learning and moving. It covers:
- Communication (talking and understanding)
- Gross Motor (running, jumping, climbing)
- Fine Motor (using hands and fingers)
- Problem Solving (figuring things out)
- Personal-Social skills (playing and interacting with others)
ASQ:SE-2: Social-Emotional Development
The ASQ:SE-2 focuses on how your child is doing emotionally and socially. It looks at things like:
- How your child handles frustration
- How they calm down
- How they play with others
- How they follow routines
Together, these two screeners give a fuller picture of your child’s growth.
