Honoring Service & Strengthening Our Community – Spirit of the Community Breakfast

This morning, we joined fellow community members at the Livingston County United Way’s Spirit of the Community & Volunteer Recognition Breakfast—a celebration of dedication, service, and collective impact.

Held at Crystal Gardens Banquet Center, the event brought together local leaders, volunteers, and organizations committed to improving the lives of families and individuals in Livingston County. The program was filled with heartfelt recognition, inspiring stories, and a deep appreciation for those who give their time, talent, and treasures to support their neighbors.

The Growing Need in Our Community

The 2024 ALICE Report underscores why the work of Livingston County United Way and its partners is so critical:
📌 41% of Michigan households struggle to afford basic needs.
📌 In Livingston County, 28% of households fall under the ALICE threshold—working families who earn too much for assistance but too little to cover essentials.
📌 The number of ALICE families has increased by 5% since last year due to rising costs in food, utilities, housing, and transportation.

Meanwhile, Livingston County United Way’s 2025 Annual Report showcases the tangible impact of local programs:
✔️ 3.8 million pounds of food were distributed to families in need.
✔️ 3,071 nights of shelter were provided to homeless individuals and families.
✔️ 2,708 caregivers were provided info, resources, tools, training and/or teaching skills.
✔️ 282 households received rental and utility assistance to avoid homelessness.

Recognizing the Heart of Our Community

The event also honored outstanding volunteers and organizations with prestigious awards, including:
🏆 Young Person of Distinction – Annabeth Reckling
🏆 Youth Organization of the Year – Howell High School H.O.P.E. Squad
🏆 Charles W. Itsell Volunteer of the Year – Teresa Plummer
🏆 Donald Epley Lifetime Service Award – Peter Bowen
🏆 Randy Rudisill Business of the Year – Griffith Realty

These awards highlight the dedication of individuals and groups who make Livingston County a better place to live.

A Morning of Inspiration & Commitment

Beyond the awards, we heard powerful messages about the importance of community investments in areas like:
✔️ Early childhood education and care – ensuring all children have a strong start
✔️ Housing and food security – providing critical support to families in need
✔️ Volunteerism and philanthropy – encouraging all of us to step up and give back

At Great Start Livingston, we see firsthand how these efforts shape brighter futures for young children and families. We are grateful for partners like Livingston County United Way, whose work aligns with our mission of building community connections that support families of young children.
