Lead in Venison

Falling leaves aren’t the only orange you’ll be seeing in Michigan this autumn! Hunting season is upon us, with archery season beginning in October and firearm season beginning in November. This month we wanted to share some important health considerations for hunting families in Michigan.

The Division of Environmental Health’s Eat Safe Fish and Wild Game Program created materials about lead in venison. These resources provide recommendations for how to choose the best ammunition and process your harvest to reduce lead exposure. We encourage you to share throughout your community!

Learn more about how to prevent exposure to lead hazards and protect your health at Mi Lead Safe (Michigan.gov) or contact Don Nowicki, NowickiD2@michigan.gov.

Learn more about hunting and your health at Michigan.gov/EatSafeFish or contact Harry Castle, CastleH@michigan.gov.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions or if you’d like to chat about opportunities to expand environmental health education within your community!

Best,
