Sparking Big Imaginations: Inside “Little Artists’ Night”

What happens when you mix vibrant, world-class art with 265 babies, toddlers, preschoolers, and their families? A whole lot of beautiful chaos, creative energy, and brand-new masterpieces!

On March 26, the Arthur Secunda Museum at Cleary University paired up with Great Start Livingston and the Howell Carnegie Library to host Little Artists’ Night—and the turnout was absolutely spectacular.

For the vast majority of the families who attended, this was their very first time discovering the museum. Walking through the bright, artwork-lined hallways, the kids didn’t just look at the art; they truly connected with it. Arthur Secunda’s bold colors and expressive textures proved to be the perfect inspiration for young minds.

Hands-On Masterpieces & Scavenger Hunts

The museum was completely transformed into an interactive playground for budding creatives, featuring:

  • Five Art-Making Stations: Little ones got their hands sticky with torn-paper collages and received a kid-friendly intro to printmaking—both techniques mirroring Secunda’s iconic style.
  • A Gallery Scavenger Hunt: Turning the exhibition hallways into an interactive game that kept energetic toddlers engaged.
  • The Quiet Room: A relaxed space dedicated to coloring and winding down.
  • Extra Goodies: Free books about art, plenty of snacks, and even live background music from a talented teen harpist.

The museum has welcomed many other visitors this spring, including middle and high school students, a church group, a retirement community, and Cleary staff offspring for Take Your Kid to Work Day. If you’d like a customized tour for your specific group of friends, coworkers, or family, let us know!

A New Light on Secunda’s Work

The Michigan Arts and Culture Council has awarded us a grant to upgrade museum lighting this year. The museum will now be able to properly light and feature all of the work on display, creating a more engaging and immersive visitor experience.

This grant will also allow us to replace current lighting with LED bulbs—the lower wattage of LEDs will lower long-term light exposure to preserve works on paper for generations to come.
