Parents, Your Voice Matters: Help Shape Early Literacy Across Michigan
At Great Start Livingston, we believe in the power of parent voice to create lasting change for young children and their families. That’s why we’re thrilled to share an exciting opportunity from one of our trusted statewide partners: Reach Out and Read Michigan is launching its very first Parent Advisory Committee—and they want to hear from YOU.
If you’re a parent or caregiver of a child age 0–5 and you’re passionate about early literacy, healthy child development, and building strong relationships, this is your chance to make a meaningful impact.
What is the Parent Advisory Committee?
Reach Out and Read Michigan is forming a group of parents from across the state to provide input on early literacy efforts and ensure that programs reflect the real-life experiences of families. The committee will help guide how books, reading routines, and developmental conversations are introduced during well-child visits—something that can be life-changing for families with young children.
Who Should Apply?
All Michigan parents and caregivers of children ages 0–5 are encouraged to apply, especially those who:
- Value the importance of early reading and bonding with their child
- Want to make Michigan’s early literacy efforts more inclusive and responsive
- Enjoy collaboration, community-building, and sharing their lived experiences
You do not need to have any formal experience, just a passion for helping families thrive. Diversity of background, region, culture, and experience is encouraged.
What’s Involved?
Parent Advisors will:
- Participate in virtual meetings
- Share feedback on early literacy initiatives and resources
- Receive $30/hour compensation for their time
This is a paid leadership opportunity designed with family schedules in mind.
Why Does This Matter in Livingston County?
In Livingston County, more than 11,000 children are under the age of six, and 66% of them live in homes where all parents are in the workforce. Access to books, early developmental screenings, and trusted guidance from pediatric providers can make a big difference in how our little ones grow and learn.
At Great Start Livingston, we work every day to build community connections that support families of young children. Opportunities like this help lift up parent voice. That is one of the most powerful tools we have to create systems that work better for everyone.
