Learning Through Play: STEAM, Developmental Milestones, and Community at Our Playdate

This week, Great Start Livingston hosted a joyful community playdate focused on one simple but powerful idea: play is how young children learn best.

It was so meaningful to meet many new families and have the chance to share more about Help Me Grow Livingston — and the important role it plays in supporting families across Livingston County. Help Me Grow provides centralized access to local resources and connects families with a dedicated care coordinator (a real person!) who can help answer questions, offer guidance, and support a child’s development from birth through age five.

It was also wonderful to reconnect with families and friends we have missed. Seeing familiar faces alongside new ones reminded us how important community connection is for both children and caregivers.

Why This Playdate Mattered

This playdate was intentionally designed to show families how STEAM skills (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) can be integrated with early childhood developmental milestones — all through simple, active play.

Families with children ages 3–5 received take-home STEAM activity kits to continue learning at home. We also shared adapted versions of the activities for children ages 0–3, ensuring that even our youngest learners could participate in developmentally appropriate ways.

Featured Activity: Movement Dice

One of the highlights of the playdate was Movement Dice, an activity that looks like fun — because it is — but also supports learning across multiple areas of development.

Through Movement Dice, children practiced:

  • Science: Learning how their bodies move through space (jumping, stretching, balancing)
  • Technology: Following a simple system (roll → think → move) and interpreting symbols
  • Engineering: Problem-solving and adjusting movements to fit their space and abilities
  • Art: Creative movement and self-expression
  • Math: Counting turns, sequencing actions, and comparing movements (fast/slow, big/small)

Activities like this help build the foundation for physical development, communication, social-emotional skills, and early thinking — all essential for school readiness.

Books, Snacks, and Community Support

Families also received a free book and snack, provided by Great Start Livingston and Help Me Grow Livingston, reinforcing the connection between literacy, social connection, nourishment, and learning through play.

A huge thank you to BIGGBY Coffee for generously providing free coffee, chocolate milk, and cookies for families to enjoy during the event.

Thank You to Our Community Partners

This playdate would not have been possible without our amazing partners, including:

  • Howell Recreation
  • MDHHS Environmental Health
  • Unwritten Endings
  • United Way of Livingston County

We also appreciate Livingston Educational Service Agency for being there to capture photos and moments from the day.

We were honored to welcome Karen Rex from the Rex Foundation, who generously provided a donation to help us continue offering meaningful, play-based learning opportunities for families in our community.

Play Builds Skills — and Community

Events like this remind us that learning doesn’t have to be complicated. When families are given simple tools, supportive connections, and welcoming spaces, children thrive.

We look forward to seeing you at future Great Start Livingston playdates and family events!
