Federal Eviction Moratorium is Extended, Michigan Renters and Landlords Urged to Seek Emergency Assistance Available Now

President Biden issued a new federal moratorium on evictions in early August after the existing national moratorium expired. The new order extends through October 3, 2021.

Millions in Emergency Rental Assistance funding are still available to Michigan renters and landlords. Any tenant or landlord may initiate the process to receive federal funds to help those facing pandemic-related hardships avoid eviction while also ensuring landlords can be paid the rent owed to them through the COVID Emergency Rental Assistance (CERA) Program. MSHDA administers CERA through a statewide network of non-profit agencies. We encourage everyone who is eligible to apply today and take advantage of this program that can help restore housing stability for owners and renters.

Several million dollars in additional emergency assistance for rent, mortgages, and utilities has been sent to Michigan by President Biden and approved by Congress, but the Michigan State Legislature needs to pass final legislation to help Michiganders stay safe in their homes. The Legislature should take action as soon as they reconvene to get these needed dollars to the individuals, families, and small businesses who need them to stay on the road to financial recovery.
