How to Get a Free Lead-Reducing Water Filter in Michigan
Lead exposure can have a lasting impact on our health, but the good news is that it is completely preventable. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) is taking a major step forward with its statewide Get Ahead of Lead (GAoL) strategy—a comprehensive approach designed to protect families by reducing lead risks in drinking water, plumbing, paint, and dust.
As part of this initiative, MDHHS is offering free, certified lead-reducing water filters and replacement cartridges to eligible Michigan households. Here is everything you need to know about who qualifies and how to claim yours.
Who is Eligible for a Free Filter?
To qualify for the Statewide Filter Support Program, your household must meet both of the following conditions:
- Medicaid Enrollment: Your household must include a child or children under the age of 19 who are enrolled in Medicaid, OR a pregnant individual enrolled in Medicaid.
- Plumbing Risk: Your home has, or potentially has, lead-containing plumbing. This includes:
- Lead or galvanized plumbing inside the home.
- A lead service line connecting your home to the street water main.
- Faucets, fixtures, or fittings sold or installed before 2014.
Note: If your home is served by a private well, you are still eligible to apply as long as your household meets the Medicaid requirement and has potential plumbing risks!
Simple Everyday Steps to Reduce Lead Exposure
While you wait for your filter, or as a general best practice for healthy homes, remember to flush your pipes. Moving water reduces the amount of lead that can leach from household plumbing into your drinking water.
