Social-Emotional Supports & Services Resources
The Great Start Livingston Pediatric and Family Health Committee is pleased to share the Social Emotional Supports and Services Resource Guide, for families and children prenatal to age 8.
This guide will help you identify local workshops, classes, therapy and support to strengthen and develop social-emotional skills in your child. It is divided into 5 categories:
- Home Visiting
- Community Support
- School Based
- Workshops/Social Connections
- Counseling/Therapy
Social-emotional health affects children’s overall development and learning. Research indicates children who are mentally healthy tend to be happier, are more motivated to learn and perform better academically. Children who struggle with social-emotional development are more likely to have trouble following directions, have low self-esteem and do poorly in school. There can be lifelong consequences. Areas of social-emotional development include the ability to:
- Play, negotiate and get along with others
- Listen and follow directions
- Have close relationships with caregivers and peers
- Understand and manage emotions
- Care about others’ emotions and show empathy
- Express wishes and needs
