Day of Caring Brings Fresh Stories to StoryWalks Across Livingston County

There is something special about seeing a community come together to create opportunities for young children and families.

This August, Great Start Livingston was fortunate to once again participate in Livingston County United Way’s Day of Caring, and we are incredibly grateful to the team from Hartland Insurance Agency Inc. who spent their day helping us bring fresh stories to seven StoryWalk locations across Livingston County.

Our StoryWalks combine two things that are so important during the early years: reading and active family time together. Pages from children’s books are displayed along walking paths, allowing families to read a story page by page while exploring a local park or community space.

Why StoryWalks Matter

For young children, something as simple as taking a walk and talking about a story creates opportunities to build vocabulary, encourage curiosity, strengthen early literacy skills, and create positive experiences around books.

StoryWalks also give families a free activity they can enjoy together on their own schedule. There is no registration, no cost, and no need to arrive at a certain time. Families can simply visit a StoryWalk, move at their own pace, and enjoy reading together.

Seven StoryWalks, One Incredible Volunteer Team

Changing the stories at seven locations across Livingston County is no small project!

During Day of Caring, the Hartland Insurance Agency team divided up and traveled throughout the county to remove the previous stories and install new books for families to discover.

Words cannot express how grateful we are to this incredible team.

They brought enthusiasm, teamwork, and a willingness to roll up their sleeves and help make literacy fun and accessible for families throughout Livingston County.
